The public pays for it, but we cannot see it. hopefully someone out there can unlock them for us. One file is named Common.zip and the other is appropriately named Coquitlam.zip.

Hopefully the Friends Of DeBouville Slough (FODBS) know more about it.

Happy New Year !
The encroaching bush in a few places has caused us to remove some of the boxes, since the present caretakers are not removing the brush as much as in the past. Bears were apparently a problem here and also at Minnekhada, where they had discovered that there was a meal sometimes to be found inside :(
Twenty four brave naturalists were involved, and the weather was perfect.
Highlight for many was seeing a photogenic pygmy owl, and the trumpeter swans in the Widgeon Slough.
Read about and see a little of what we saw last year from the 2014 CBC

This year we had the honour of two more souls, Megan and Jayme joining in the adventure and they helped considerably in raising the species counted, and the quantity. Plus we were lucky to add a few new species for this walk, the elusive Brown Creeper, which was always suspected, but was creeping elsewhere whenever we walked through. And Anna's Hummingbirds which in hindsight I had heard about overwintering here, but we had never spotted before; a few residents along our route had hummingbird feeders setup and filled, so our work was easy, just look for the feeders.

We were not far along on our adventure when two dogs became interested in us, appearing to live at 4071 Cedar Drive, they followed us for a few kilometers, well into Minnekhada Farm, when a Metro parks staff member, Mellisa became interested in them, being that no unleashed dogs are allowed in the park. We explained to her the situation and she tried to contact the owners, after reading the dog tags but no one was home. She even drove down to the residence but received no answer. At least from now on we had no dog escort to hinder our count.

I am sad to report the loss of one of the roosters, Gallus gallus domesticus metallii
Your donation would be gratefully appreciated.

If you are bringing an item for the auction, would you please let me know the value, minimum bid and item description prior to the meeting so that I can prepare a bidding form. Also, if you are paying your membership it would be very much appreciated if you paid by cheque - saves confusion on my part!

Slideshow and Silent Auction to benefit Mossom Creek Hatchery

It will be an evening of views, food and the fun of a silent auction at the annual general meeting on Tuesday. Browse and bid on items and gift certificates donated by local businesses, plus items and services donated by BMN members.

The services offered this year include a canoe trip on Port Moody Inlet, a lesson in Japanese cooking in your own kitchen, computer lessons, lessons in photography for two at Colony Farm Park, handyman services, and more. There will also be a bake table with delectable items for sale, and volunteers from the Riverview Horticultural Centre Society will sell fresh holly and other seasonal decorations.

Funds raised will be donated to help the rebuilding of the Mossom Creek Hatchery and Education Centre. This hatchery began as a project of Centennial School’s salmon enhancement club in 1976, and went on to become a productive hatchery and school teaching facility. It was destroyed by fire in December 2013.

The meeting will include a brief AGM, seasonal refreshments and live music, after which president Ian McArthur will present a slideshow featuring highlights of the past year’s hikes, invasive plant removal parties, nest box cleaning, public nature walks and other BMN activities. BMN enters its 26th year in the community this year!

This meeting also provides an opportunity to sign up for the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count held this year on Saturday, January 3rd. Every year for the past 21 years, the Naturalists have collected data on the numbers and species of wintering birds in the Tri-Cities area as part of the larger Audubon North American census which is the world’s longest running wildlife census, now in its 115th year, and involves over 60,000 birders. Participation is free, and anyone interested in joining a team of birders can contact BMN at BurkeMtnNats@gmail.com or call Victoria at 604-937-5379.

For new members - Tuesday’s meeting will be held in the hall of Como Lake United Church which is located on the corner of Marmont Street and King Albert Avenue in Coquitlam. Doors open at 7:00 pm and silent auction bidding will end at 9:00 pm. For further information, please contact 604-936-4108 or 604-461-3864, or see www.bmn.bc.ca.

Hope to see you there.niftyniallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16889079546931648669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537759829396886068.post-80890816223509315972014-12-06T09:58:00.001-08:002014-12-06T09:58:09.174-08:00Force of nature meet about Kinder morgan In the last few weeks the Kinder Morgan pipeline has been in the headlines a lot and its been all bad news for those narrow interests that want to see tankers filled with tar sands crude off our shores. The recent events on Burnaby Mountain have increased awareness and opposition to these pipeline projects and have opened the door to a broader conversation about these issues.

We need to take advantage of this moment and get out in our communities and have as many conversations as possible with our neighbours while the risks of this pipeline is still front of mind. That is why Force of Nature is holding an Activist Meeting next Wednesday and I want you to join us.

At Force of Nature, we believe that our elected leaders should stand up for the communities that they represent. When it comes to communities like ours, that are under threat from the Kinder Morgan pipeline, we need more than ever to be sure that we are electing champions that will fight for us.

We believe that the best way to make sure this happens is by creating engaged, resilient communities and that the we can only achieve this by getting out in neighbourhoods like yours and having face to face conversations with our friends and neighbours.

That is where you come in, we need your help to build the kind of community that can stand up to Kinder Morgan and take back our countries politics.

Please join us at the Activist Meeting and find out how you can be part of this growing movement to keep this dirtiest of fossil fuels out of our communities.

If you have any questions please feel free to call me directly at 604 379 6735.
Thank you for your support

Elaine Golds of the Burke Mountain Naturalists hosted the event, with Ben West, of ForestEthics ; Fin Donnelly, MP New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody; the always passionate Joe Foy, of the Wilderness Committee; Sav Dhaliwal, Burnaby councillor, and Mayor, Richard Stewart, and Craig Hodge, councillor of Coquitlam, providing inspirational speeches.

Followed with some themed singing by the Solidarity Notes labour choir

Other groups spotted were Pipe Up network and the Let BC Vote campaign, which wants the public to be able to vote individually on many public policy issues.

Also the Youth against Pipelines in our parks, was there, also the The green Party of Canada had a table set up, being so close to "silly season" and all the wannabe and incumbents were tripping over each other for their voice to be heard.

One interesting thing that I noticed was that the Canadian Pacific Railway police were at the entrance to Colony Farm, where the tracks are, and it is apparently the possible staging site for the future Kinder-Morgan fiasco in the future, and on my way home from the event the RCMP were also there with the CPR officer.
I guess there must have been some anarchists, radicals or the like nearby ☺ at least I could not smell any tear gas.
The Naturalists had a twenty-five year anniversary celebration meeting at the regular monthly meeting. it was well attended, with over 70 members and supporters in attendance. Made me think about how much land the group has been able to save through the years.
It would be somewhere near 400 square kilometers, Burke-Pinecone Provincial Park is 380 square kilometers in area, and this would make the lands preserved with the help of other groups to be larger than 45 countries
I Like that idea. Stay tuned for a 50 year anniversary celebration
This fellow has a mountain named after him Don Gillespie Mount Gillespie Apparently they normally do not name land features after living people, but by a coincidence, other unrelated Gillespie's had also explored the area in the past. Norma Gillespie, Don's wife on the left, both are tireless supporters of BMN.niftyniallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16889079546931648669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537759829396886068.post-44101609403920364902014-06-03T00:07:00.000-07:002014-06-03T14:47:34.022-07:00BMN walk through RiverviewLast Sunday June 1, members of BMN, with our fearless leader Don G., led a group of nearly 40 through the Riverview grounds, visiting Finnies Garden, the old Orchard, and the Riverview Creek rearing ponds area.

A nice sunny day, and the arboretum was especially colourful, and we were lucky to see a small ephemeral pond that was providing a refuge to at least seven Western Toads.
The trip was organized in aid of generating some monies to rebuild the Mossom Creek hatchery, after the disastrous fire last year.

I have created two albums of photographs one at Flickr and another at Panoramio.

And Dave Mountenay has shared some of his photographs at the Friends of DeBoville Slough website

Also Paul Steeves has shared his photo album of the adventure

And Jolene Bonhomme has shared her album with us.

Along the way there are pictographs to be seen, the best known of which are near Best Point, a few poor quality images HERE

But there are many other pictograph sites painted onto the cliffs of the fiord; a short summary below.

DiRr 2. About 750 meters north of Brighton Beach on the western shore of the arm.

DiRr 6. On the western shore of the arm, about 275 meters north of site DiRr 7.

DiRr 7. On the western shore of the arm south of Croker Island and about 275 meters south of DiRr 6.

DiRr 8. On the eastern shore of the arm on cliffs to the east of the Vancouver City Powerhouse site.

DiRr 9. On the western shore of the arm about 100 meters north of Brighton Beach, site DiRr 2.
.
DiRr 10. On the eastern shore of the arm, almost directly across from Alder Creek, between the powerhouse and Twin Islands.

DiRr 11. At North Sunshine on the western shore of the Arm.

DiRr 12. On the western shore of the Arm, just north of Deep Cove Marina, and a little beyond the Grey Rocks powerline.

DiRr 13. On the western shore of the arm opposite Farrer Cove and approximately at Grey Rocks.

DiRr 14. Approximately 125 feet south of Site DiRr 2 on the western shore of the arm.

The list above from taken from: Rock art of the Northwest Coast (PDF)
Author: Doris Marion Lundy, M.A. dissertion thesis, 1974 SFU.

There are also numerous pictographs along Pitt Lake, the most well known can be viewed in my Pitt Lake blog
The Pitt Lake pictographs have fared better to the weather, and most of the designs appear to be more recent then the art along indian Arm.

Some of the wildlife and ecology seen during the trip.

BMN member Hillary Maguire has shared her birdlist at EBIRD
And Megan Willie's bird list, also at EBIRD

( Makes me wonder if the birds were counting us, and posting the data on EHUMAN. Certainly appears to be lots of lifeforms utilizing Indian Arm. )
I thought that it may be interesting to some to see some of the more historic photographs of the fiord. The area has been enjoyed by people since the earliest times of occupation. Granite Falls, on Grand Creek

This is the largest waterfall in Indian Arm, the immediate area near it was heavily exploited for the local granitic rocks, which were used as building stone, and later as rip-rap primarily in the Lower Mainland area. After the mining was over, a recreational lodge opened up on the site, which did not last very long. (If you want to know more about the quarry, just PM me, I have a fair amount of facts and figures about the mine. ). The Grand Creek watershed has been heavily logged, and the resultant damage is very evident in the hills above, numerous slides abound from the road building efforts involved in getting to the wood. A nice quick read of some of the history of the area near Granite Falls is available HERE as a PDF. Today in 2014 the area is part of Indian Arm Provincial Park.
The company is looking at possibly going through the park with their pipeline, along the Lougheed highway, and onwards to LaFarge,(Coquitlam Centre area) then to Burnaby.
Trans Mountain of course in theory must answer to the National Energy Board, (NEB) the public can view the regulatory documents that the various companies submit in their applications.

Not directly related to the Trans mountain application, but related to transportation in Burrard Inlet : 1973 Oil spill in English Bay Trans Mountain of course will create a large increase in shipping traffic through Burrard Inlet, much more than they do at the present time.

Personally I struggle with the fact that a company can apply to build something, yet they have no idea where it will be located. Kind of like me going to the nearest city and saying, I want to build a gazillion square foot building, but I have no idea where yet, and expect an Okay from the local council; something wrong here.
Description: Gilley Brother's barge dredging a channel to place the Trans Mountain pipeline under the Fraser River at Port Mann. Photograph published in the British Columbian page 1, March 7, 1953. Likely photographed from the Coquitlam shore looking towards Surrey. ( Personally I think that the photo was shot on the Surrey side, looking over towards Coquitlam. Railway is on the Port Mann side )
Today, they will probably use direction drilling to place the pipe; the old way shown in this photo made a huge mess, and is still used where the public would not care as much about their environment.
I have been documenting the destruction locally for quite some time now, and the Evergreen Line, folks were always saying all will be fine, and why not? It is a large project, and a sensible person would think that environmental damage will be diminished as much as possible; since there is supposedly a large team in place to deal with any issues as they arise. Apparently though public relations is the cheaper way out, since as I found out today and at other times, just in a very small area, attempts at mitigating pollution were very sparse to non-existent on the ground. Have a look at these photos taken today (March 6, 2014) in a very small section of Scott Creek.

Also from the Tri-City News, Big plans for Brunette, Pinetree
Sounds quite silly to me, to want to turn Pinetree into some sort of grand entrance, stage set. We have lost considerable tree cover along Pinetree with all the Evergreen Line, construction going on; But we have lost considerably more along the Scott Creek corridor, and along the edges of the C.P.R. mainline, leading to Port Moody which was much more valuable to the wildlife that remains around here, but as usual out of sight, out of mind. The odds of a tree ever being anything along Pinetree are next to nil, when the elevated line is completed, since as soon as it grows up a little, out come the saws to keep it away from the elevated line. Trees at least would have a chance along the Scott Creek, C.P.R. corridor. Only small specimen types of trees, would possibly do well along Pinetree, but the sad part is that small trees are easily vandalized, and the evidence of that is easy to be found in the immediate area.

Have installed a weather station near the top of Coast Meridian Road, actually just down Harper Road, at the Water tank, and named it the Burke Mountain Rain Gauge at least now they will have a better idea eventually about how to size the construction ponds, to deal with the high rainfall events. Probably too little too late, since it takes years to gather up very relevant data.

Pitt Meadows weather forecast, from Environment Canada, is a useful tool, but it is on the lowlands, and does not reflect what is happening at higher elevations.

Environment Canada also has a gauge on Como Lake Avenue, installed in 1972.

Some historical data:
There has been 480 weather stations within 100Km., of Burnaby. Some operated many years ago, sometimes for just a few years, but they all tell a story.

Today in 2014 there is 26 weather stations still active within a 50 Km radius of Burnaby (missed the newer station on Burke in this listing though. )

So when someone says it was raining cats and dogs, you can now say no, it rained 22mm, yesterday with certainty.
The weather forecast was for sun in the morning changing to snow, and when we arrived at Widgeon the clouds were dropping quickly, and we were being occasionally dusted with very little snow, nothing to really bother us in our task at hand. Bird box usage was high as usual for this park, and we saw at least a <strike>hundred</strike> 90 Trumpeter swans off in the distance trumpeting occasionally in the slough.
"Research" in our parks could easily be Fracking, mining, pipelines, resource harvesting in a park near you, appears to be the road that the present "government" wants to go down with OUR parks. Somebody forgot to tell them that Parks above all should be to protect nature, and are not to be industrialized if at all possible. Is nothing sacred, with these people? Oh, yes Money in their pockets.
Gas wells in Stanley Park next, but wait that has been tried before, fairly close by anyway and the brokers won, and the investors lost, as usual.
But the misssss-spellllling persists, oh well. Interesting family too, some real characters, well embedded into the local history of B.C., Washington state.

Anyway the fiefdom of Coquitlam is undertaking some scheme to destroy portions of the park.
With the working title of the : Mundy Park Forest Management Plan --- Preliminary Concept (PDF)

Typical extreme paranoia about fire hazards, hopefully it will not end up looking like Ridge Park
oh, wait, it probably will, maybe even worse, since there are many homes physically very close to the forest in Mundy Park.

I look forward to the day when the debate, and the typical $60,000 study that will follow it, starts to right a historic wrong and give the park back its rightful name of Munday Park.

Ah ,the smell of fresh cut trees, and two-cycle engine fumes...
As you will quickly understand by reading the article, Mundy Park, really does conjure up many diverse ideas and values to the users of it.niftyniallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16889079546931648669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537759829396886068.post-21968135566157346752014-01-17T20:38:00.001-08:002014-02-09T14:17:11.401-08:00Spending our childrens savingsSo the bright lights in power, have decided to have a huge land sale of OUR Burke Mountain lands, to "balance" the books. My money says that this will be more of a give-away, and that our return on our lands will be negligible, as usual whenever the government gets involved in land sales. A long, long history of this type of thing in this Province, Country for that matter. As usual it will get sold, then we will buy lots back, because we need places for schools, firehalls, etc. and the developers, will have made back their money, and the rest is gravy.

Having been one of the few people who have actually traversed ALL of the lands in question; I have to ask, why the lands were not properly surveyed in the first place, and areas of concern not sold. There are large areas of these lands, that have a history of wanting to be level. AKA slides; but wait, these days there is large developments downhill of these properties.

Sell it and let the developer find someone to sign off on it; typical.

Tri-City News: Province is selling 584 acres on Burke
have a peek at the comments, I am sure that many potential problems will be written down there.

This land sale will be controversial to say the least. With some difficult obstacles to overcome in developing the sites too.

And the "Tireless" town Parliament is on the bandwagon already proposing yet another plan:
Northwest Burke Vision - Scope and Process (PDF)

Also word is that Pinecone Burke Provincial Park, will finally have a Master Management Plan, started this year, long overdue. Keep an eye on the Parks website, to provide your thoughts on the matter. which will be just in time, because a few of the tracts of land included in the Province's land give-away, adjoin the park.

UPDATE: created a Google Earth file, that shows the boundary's of the land sale; gives an idea of the sight-lines that will be greatly impacted. Suddenly Minnekhada Park, will not look at rural as it is today.

A shortsighted sale? Newspaper article, remembering how the taxpayer was robbed with the selling of lands that encompass todays Westwood Plateau. The present "government" wants to repeat the mistakes made with Westwood Plateau; where we had to but back from the developer all the school sites that we needed, and guess what? We paid more for those small properties, than what the entire site was sold for to the developer. Remember we owned the land previous to selling, paid nothing for it.

The City of Coquitlam released this:
Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Provincial Land Sales in Coquitlam, Burke Mountain Land Sales

The Province of British Columbia is currently offering for sale 236 hectares (584 acres) of undeveloped Crown land located on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam. The intent of this Notice is to make potential purchasers of these Provincial lands aware of the City of Coquitlam’s community planning policies contained in the Citywide Official Community Plan (CWOCP) and the Northeast Coquitlam Area Plan (NECAP) (and the supporting Neighbourhood Plans) that pertain to these lands. The City’s policies in this regard are intended to guide future land use and development of these lands and highlight the potential environmental and other challenges relating to these lands being offered for sale.

The Province has organized these Crown lands into three Property Groups (see attached map). Information regarding the City’s various plans, land use and environmental considerations has been summarized under each of the three Property Groups below:

Crown Property Groups

Group 1

The majority of Property Group 1 is located in the Partington Creek Neighbourhood Plan (PNCP), with small portions situated in the Smiling Creek Neighbourhood Plan (SCNP) and the future Northwest Burke Vision area (see below for website links to these neighbourhood plans). City Council has approved these Neighbourhood Plans and some of the parcels offered for sale are accordingly planned to be developed as either single family homes or townhouses. Two of the parcels are also planned to potentially accommodate school sites; future development of these two parcels will require consultation with School District # 43 regarding school site needs, location and configuration. To ensure that future school site needs are addressed, the PNCP also includes policies that call for input and verification of School District #43 needs (see PNCP Policy 3.3.1). Three of the other Crown parcels in Group 1 are also planned to include, in part, a future water reservoir and parks, which the City will undertake to secure, as required, or when development proceeds.

About a quarter of this Property Group is primarily located outside the PCNP and SCNP areas and are identified as environmentally sensitive due to watercourses and very steep slopes (over 36%), which will limit development potential.

Group 2

Property Group 2 is located north of the Upper Hyde Creek and Smiling Creek Neighbourhood Plan areas, and is within the Metro Vancouver Regional Growth Strategy Urban Containment Boundary. The potential developable lands outside of existing neighbourhood plan areas will be confirmed through the Northwest Burke Vision (NBV) process, including the anticipated timing of development. The NBV is scheduled to start in spring 2014, and, once complete, the NBV will include a high-level land use and servicing concept as well as a generalized development phasing plan that will guide future planning and development over the long term (30 +years) for this vision area.

This Property Group also contains areas with very steep slopes as well as a number of watercourses as identified in the City’s CWOCP.

Group 3

The majority of lands within Property Group 3 are outside the Metro Vancouver Urban Containment Boundary and, as a result, have no urban development potential at this time under the City’s CWOCP. It should be noted that prior to development being planned for this area, Metro Vancouver agreement to amend the Regional Growth Strategy and extend the Urban Containment Boundary would be necessary (i.e., A Type 2 Regional Growth Strategy amendment would be required.)

As well, these lands are either designated environmentally sensitive or for rural residential and resource uses. There is a small portion of these lands located within the Urban Containment Boundary, but currently outside any plan area, and are designated as suburban residential. Another portion of this Property Group is within the PCNP and is planned for single family homes. At this time, there is no land use planning process anticipated by the City to further study these lands (outside of the PCNP) and determine their potential developability.

For more information, contact: City of Coquitlam Planning and Development Department at 604-927-3430 or planninganddevelopment@coquitlam.ca.

Quick Links

Citywide Official Community Plans

Northeast Coquitlam Area Plan

Upper Hyde Creek Neighbourhood Plan

Smiling Creek Neighbourhood Plan

Partington Creek Neighbourhood Plan

Report to Council on the Northwest Burke Vision Proposed Scope and Process – December 9, 2013

Crown Land Sale Map poor quality PDF of the land give-awayniftyniallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16889079546931648669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537759829396886068.post-62059001773292043732014-01-09T17:07:00.003-08:002014-01-09T17:07:50.021-08:00Christmas Bird Count in the local papersTrends identified in Tri-City Christmas bird count and the continuation of a previous post about the count at Minnekhada farmniftyniallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16889079546931648669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537759829396886068.post-85923152463124581092013-12-26T20:34:00.001-08:002014-04-01T22:01:39.084-07:00Capercailzie in Pitt MeadowsSo what in the world is a capercailzie you say? read on:

Saw Capercailzie near Pitt Meadows

Famous game bird, imported 12 years ago from Scotland, reported not to be extinct here, as supposed.

Sportsmen and naturalists alike will be interested in the statement
Mr. Arthur Robert Sherwood, (1862-1945) president of the Natural History Society of Victoria, [ VNHS ] that capercailzie were seen In the neighborhood of Pitt Meadows, Vancouver during the past Summer.

Mr. Sherwood and Mr. Alfred Edward Crickmay,(1875-1954) of Vancouver, were present at the releasing of capercailzie at Pitt Meadows in 1907. From that time up to the present there has been little reference to the imported birds, which seemed to have disappeared. Mr. Crickmay however, asserted that he had seen one of these big game birds in the vicinity during the Summer of this year, and as the capercailzie is very much larger than any other species of grouse, there is little reason to suppose that he was mistaken.

As a game-bird it was at one time practically extinct In Scotland, but was re-Introduced and is still to be found in other parts of Northern Europe, and its survival over a period of twelve years In British Columbia would indicate, that the conditions here are suitable, provided it is given sufficient protection.

Some facts regarding birds of Province.

Members of Natural History Society given data relating to Native and Alien feathered inhabitants.
. . .
Blue Jays [ Stellar's Jay ]

There has been during this last Summer and Fall a very unusual number of blue jays in the vicinity of towns, and even on the streets. Several reasons are advanced for this, one being that these birds, being accustomed to living in the thickets and forests, have been driven out by forest fires, and another being that there is a peculiar lack of fir cones on which they feed.
The latter reason appears to hold in the vicinity of Sproat [ Sproat Lake ], where the jays left the woods to feed in the gardens on small fruit and insects. It was noted that the squirrels did the same, for apparently the same reason.
Blue jays do not migrate, so that they would not be there merely on their way south. This curious appearance in towns is being taken up and correspondence entered into with residents in different parts of the Province.

Blackbirds [ Brewers blackbird ]

These are reported to be becoming more plentiful on the Island, and flocks of them can be seen flying about farms and other cultivated areas and feeding in the plowed fields. They have come over from the Mainland, where they are very common, having come there from the Prairies and the East, following the cultivation and transportation of wheat. The name of the blackbird here is Euphagus cyanocephalus, and the male is noticeable for the beautiful blue purple sheen of its feathers and the eye which is almost white.
Crows are, as usual, very numerous.
The California quail has taken very kindly to the country, especially amongst the broom in the vicinity of Victoria. It gets both food and shelter from the broom, and may be seen running about almost anywhere in the city parks and empty lots.

British Birds.

The English songbirds which were introduced by the society in 1912 do not seem to have thrived, except as regards the skylarks which are to be heard quite often in the northeastern parts of the city, near the Normal School. Other birds have been reported at long intervals, but hardly any really authentic information has been forthcoming. The fact that the birds had such a miserable long passage from England must account for their not having been a success.

Much interest was taken in a report that a Capercailzie had been observed at the head of Pitt Meadows, and a general discussion arose, during which evidence for and against the probabilities of this bird having become acclimatized in the mountains to the north of the meadows.

The question of the effect of change of environs on bird life was discussed and a number of members gave interesting facts about the appearance or disappearance of various birds in the last ten or twenty years. Small birds which formerly lived in the eaves of old houses in Victoria and fed off the streets have gradually moved away to the suburbs on account of the paving of the streets.

Birds Driven Away

The purple martin, which was very common in 1902, and used to build under the old lamp posts, have been driven away by the sparrows, and they in turn have been driven out by the paved streets. Night hawks [ Common nighthawk ] are also leaving for pastures new.

Barn swallows, too, have gone on to the land. The hardy little English sparrows,[ House Sparrow ] who seem to be able to stand anything, have also left the paved streets, with their coating of oil.

Two instances of the imported being noted are those of the Chinese starling [ White-shouldered Starling, Sturnus sinesis ] and the ringdove. The Chinese starling has thrived wonderfully in the eastern suburbs of Vancouver, and the Lower Mainland, having apparently accidently been brought over from China. A member was surprised one day to find a ringdove [ Eurasian Collared Dove ] in his chicken house. It must have come on a ship to Victoria.

A very interesting letter from Mr. Higgs, of Saturna,[ Saturna Island ], on the subject of a tame puffin which he had, was read, and brought up the subject of tamed wild birds and some interesting facts regarding them. Mrs. McIlroy spoke of losing a pet canary from a cage in Victoria and finding some two years afterwards the same bird clinging to the cage, evidently glad to get back home after two Winters in the open.
First appearance of various flowers and plants were reported. It is hoped that anyone observing the coming of Spring flowers, either in the woods or in outside cultivation, will send word to that effect to some member of the society, as a record book is kept year by year for this purpose.
Alien Animals in British Columbia, by: G.C. Carl and C.J. Guiguet

Excerpt about the Capercaillie: In 1906, 14 Capercaillie were released near Cowichan Lake on Vancouver Island, and eight were liberated near Lake Buntzen on the mainland. Stock was obtained from Denmark and released by Mr. Chaldecott (see note 1) and Mr. Musgrave.

Present status in British Columbia: These introductions failed, and the capercaillie does not occur in British Columbia now. This species is a very large tree-loving grouse, somewhat resembling the blue grouse [ Dusky Grouse ] but much larger. It is native to the pine forests of northern and central Europe and Asia. It was once indigenous to northern Scotland and Ireland, but was exterminated there in the late 1700’s. It was reintroduced in 1837 and still occurs there.
English Skylark

In the fall of 1903, 100 pairs of skylarks, Aluada arvensis were released near Victoria by the Natural History Society of British Columbia; in 191 an additional 49 birds were liberated in the same areas. Others are said to have been released about the same time on the Lower Mainland at the mouth of the Fraser River (Brooks and Swarth, 1925 ). Prior to this, in 1908 or 1910 a G.H. Wallace is said to have imported a number of skylarks, along with other British birds which included Red breasts, Blue tits, Linnets, and Goldfinches. These were apparently released at various points on the Saanich Peninsula. None but the skylarks survived. I n1919 a Mrs. E.A. Morton is said to have released five imported skylarks at Oak Bay. Present Status in British Columbia: Established in suitable grasslands in the vicinity of Victoria, on the Saanich Peninsula, and sometimes on Sidney Island. Much of the habitat occupied by the skylark was usurped by housing and other projects in the 1960’s with a subsequent population decline....
